The importance of bananas
Bananas are the most popular tropical fruit in the world. However, bringing ripe bananas to market, from tropical plantations to food stores, is a complex process.
-
Yellow banana trees
Up to 170 bananas can grow on a single tree. Unlike seasonal fruit, bananas grow all year round.
-
The yellow banana route
250 containers a week = 5000 tons of bananas
-
Yellow banana plantations
Yellow plantations spread over 4500 hectares. Bananas are picked while still green to retain the right freshness.
-
Preparation for shipping
Packed bananas are transported to the ship. After picking, the bananas are moved to hangars. There they are washed and packaged for shipping. Temperature must not be too low, as this results in overcooling of the product, but in higher temperatures, the banana ripens and may not last in transport.
